Barbie Leung is a New York cinematographer focused on narrative film, and was recently awarded a spot in the
AFI Conservatory’s Cinematography Intensive for Women, Class of 2019.
Leung's notable narrative shorts so far include family dramedy TELL-BY DATE (Outfest 2019) starring “The L Word: Generation Q” cast member, Brian Michael, experimental thriller DISFORIA (Outfest, Newfest 2018), and Slamdance Best Short Screenplay winner CRYBABY, a one-take psychological horror that screened at Fantasia Film Festival 2017.
Before moving into the role of cinematographer Leung worked as a non-union AC, then grip & electrician, before joining the SOC (Society of Camera Operators) as an associate member in late 2018. Camera operating for Emmy Nominated DP, Zoe White, on the feature THE MISOGYNISTS was an invaluable experience, as was operating for DP Alice Brooks on THE REMIX (Tribeca Film Festival 2019), and Yamit Shimonovitz & Soraya Sélène on HALF THE PICTURE (Sundance, SXSW 2018).
Although mainly interested in narrative work, she was an additional cinematographer on the feature documentary NETIZENS (Tribeca 2018), and has DP'd pieces for Vice, Condé Nast, and various creative agencies in LA, NY, and Atlanta. Clients include Red Bull, Uber, and Lyft.
Leung is an organizing member of the ICFC (International Collective of Female Cinematographers), and CinematographersXX. She lives in Queens, NY with her partner of 15 years and in her free time curates her dogs' Instagram accounts.
